Book of Dead slot review — which payout build your Dutch lobby runs

Two Dutch lobbies, one number: TOTO publishes 94.25% for Book of Dead and our paytable check at ComeOn found the same, while the studio default most reviews quote is 96.21%. That gap is this review in miniature — Dutch law regulates the protections around the game, not the payout build inside it. One minute in the info screen settles which version your KSA-licensed lobby actually runs.

Book of Dead Slot Netherlands: RTP & Bonus Rules | SlotsGamblers is an independent, hands-on review and guide from SlotsGamblers, with every figure checked against primary sources — the provider’s published specification, the operator’s own terms and the licence register — rather than operator marketing.

TL;DR

Book of Dead in 30 seconds

21 min read ~5,600 words 8.8/10
  • Best for: patient, high-variance players chasing the 5,000× ceiling through the expanding-symbol free spins.
  • Strong points: one expanding symbol fills a whole reel · 10 retriggerable free spins, no wagering · a clean 5×3 with adjustable 1–10 lines · stocked by ten or more KSA-licensed lobbies.
  • Watch out — the Dutch-specific one: your lobby may not run 96.21%. TOTO publishes 94.25%, and a paytable check at ComeOn found the same. On €100 that is €5.75 instead of €3.79 in cost — and most Dutch lobbies publish nothing.
  • Verdict: still the benchmark Book slot in 2026, with identical reels wherever you open them. In the Netherlands the decision is where — read the payout line before you stake.

Beyond the score The full experience

Tomb-and-torchlight art that still reads clean

Torch-lit chamber, gold-leaf chrome, Rich Wilde beside the reels — a 2016 release carried by four Egyptian premiums.

An ambient score that escalates with the feature

Base-game audio sits back until three Books land and a choral cue lifts the mix — the presentation is the most-praised part of the game.

Pulp-adventure Egypt, built for high-variance tension

Rich Wilde deep in a tomb, the Book unlocking the fortune — calm mood, punishing maths.

Book of Dead defined the "Book" sub-genre — every Legacy of Dead, Book of Oz and clone is measured against it.
ancient egypt rich wilde high volatility expanding symbol 10 paylines 5000x cap ksa-licensed

Plays calm then explosive

A deliberate base game punctuated by one high-stakes feature paying all ten lines at once.

Why this scored an 8.8

Up: a feature design the sub-genre still copies, ten-plus Dutch lobbies, reels that read on a phone. Down: only one Dutch operator publishes its build.

★ Editor's verdict
Book of Dead is the rare classic that never needed a sequel. The reels are identical wherever you open them — so in the Netherlands the variable is the lobby, not the game. Read the payout line first.

The edge erodes about €3.79 per €100 on the default and €5.75 on the build Dutch lobbies run — keep the stake small so a dry run does not end the session before the feature lands. Players report 200+ spins without a win: that is high volatility in practice.

07 Game inside

How Book of Dead actually plays

Six tabs: the feature, pacing, the sub-genre, the bankroll maths, mobile and the presentation.

Free spins · expanding symbol · retrigger

The expanding symbol is where the 5,000× lives

Land 3+ Book scatters for 10 free spins — no wagering — and one ordinary symbol, drawn before the round, fills its reel. The Book can never be drawn, and which symbol you get decides everything: Rich Wilde returns 5,000× full-screen, a Ten 100×.

Rhythm · dead spins · the wait

A base game that waits

The base game is deliberately low-event while you hunt three Books; the drama sits in the feature. You can run fewer lines to stretch a bankroll, but full-screen outcomes assume all ten.

The original and its neighbours

The original

Book of Dead perfected the mechanic in 2016; the shelf it created is now crowded — Book of Fallen (Pragmatic Play), Book of Power, Dead or a Wild, and the Novomatic classic Book of Ra the genre echoes. The closest is Play'n GO's own Legacy of Dead.

Computed bankroll walkthrough

What happens to €100 at €0.20 spins

Computed from the published rates, not a claimed test log. On the 94.25% build verified at Dutch lobbies the theoretical cost is €5.75 per €100 — about 52% more than the default.

Cross-device experience

A lightweight 2016 build that runs anywhere

The lightweight 5×3 grid runs smoothly on any recent handset in portrait with full feature parity. RTP and volatility are identical on both — the build is set by the lobby, not the device.

Art direction · animation · audio

Tomb art and an escalating feature cue

Clean 2016 Egyptian art, a dual-role Book, and a low-key soundtrack that lifts into a choral cue when the 10 free spins land — the game's own spins, so no wagering attaches. Players consistently name the presentation the game's strongest suit.

08 Symbols & paytable

Two jobs in one. As a scatter it pays anywhere — 3 / 4 / 5 return 2× / 20× / 200× your total bet and start the free spins. As a wild it substitutes for everything else. It is the one symbol that can never be drawn as the expanding symbol.

A full screen is ten lines of the same symbol, so each figure is ten times its five-of-a-kind pay. The same reel luck returns 5,000× on Rich Wilde and 100× on a Ten — fifty-fold, decided before the round and outside your control.

Two traps in the numbers above

The unit trap. Every figure here is a multiple of your total stake, but the in-game paytable counts coins per line — so the "5,000" printed beside Rich Wilde there is 500× total stake across ten lines. Many reviews reprint it as a single-line payout; Play'n GO's own guide says five on a line returns 500×.

The ceiling trap. Two limits share the name "max win": 5,000× your bet is the multiplier ceiling, while Play'n GO also caps a round's cash return at 250,000.00 USD in its US help file. The two only collide at high stakes, so at Dutch sizes 5,000× is the number that matters. Premiums also pay from two on a line, which keeps the base game from being dry.

09 Dutch rules in play

On a Dutch licence, the protections are strong — the payout rate is not

The Netherlands regulates online slots tightly — deposit limits, self-exclusion and advertising. The payout percentage is not.

No minimum payout rate existsOperator configuration, not law

Dutch law sets no floor on RTP and no duty to publish it. Which of Play'n GO's five builds your lobby runs is a commercial choice.

This is why the figure moves — check it yourself.
€350 a month, unless you talk to someoneRegeling speellimieten · 1 Oct 2024

New players start capped at €350 a month — €150 under 24. Raising it triggers a personal contact moment, not a checkbox.

Above €700 a month (€300 under 24) the operator must check you can bear it.
Cruks is checked before every sessionCentral exclusion register

Register with DigiD for at least six months and every licensed operator must turn you away. Your BSN is matched as a double-encrypted code, then destroyed.

A HIT means no access anywhere. There is an 8-day cooling-off before early exit.
One register settles who is legalArt. 31a Wet op de kansspelen

An online casino needs a Koa licence. The Kansspelwijzer lets you search by company, brand, website or app.

If a site is not in there, it has no Dutch licence.
Bonuses are advertising, and advertising is restrictedBesluit orka · 1 Jul 2023

Untargeted gambling advertising is banned by default. Any bonus linked to losses — cashback — is prohibited, urgency framing is not allowed, and under-24s may not be targeted.

Wagering terms must be stated in full and be easy to find.
iDEAL in, counter-account outStandard at licensed lobbies

iDEAL carries around 70% of Dutch online payments. Withdrawals do not travel back — they go to your verified counter-account.

iDEAL is migrating to Wero, with the brand phasing out by end 2027.

How to read the payout rate in a Dutch lobby — 60 seconds

1 Open the game In demo or real mode — no stake needed to read the panel.
2 Find the ⓘ menu Usually bottom-left, or under the burger on mobile.
3 Scroll to the last page Rules sit at the end — look for "terugbetalingspercentage" or RTP.
4 Compare it 96.21% is the default; 94.25% costs about €1.96 more per €100. No figure shown? Ask support.

Three things widely written about Dutch rules that are not true. Credit cards are not banned here — that is the British rule, copied onto Dutch pages constantly; cards are accepted at a subset of licensed casinos in your own name, though you cannot be paid out to one. The minimum age is 18, not 21: the increase was proposed and dropped in June 2026. And 24 is not a playing age — it is the threshold below which operators may not aim bonuses at you. A full advertising and bonus ban is being drafted, but it is a proposal with no timetable, not law.

10 Bonus value, stress-tested

What a "Book of Dead bonus" is actually worth in the Netherlands

Dutch operators do run welcome offers, with terms published in full because the law requires it. What almost nobody does is price one against this game, where high volatility and a lower payout build change what a bonus is really worth. Here is the arithmetic, not a roster.

Game weighting decides everythingRead this line first

Wagering counts per game, not per euro. If this title is weighted below 100% — or excluded — the bonus takes proportionally longer to clear, or cannot be cleared on it.

Find the weighting table before you opt in.
The max-bet rule is the expensive oneDocumented in complaints

Most terms cap the stake per spin while wagering; exceed it even once and the balance can be voided — a published arbitration case saw a four-figure balance confiscated exactly that way.

Nothing in the software has to stop you. Check the cap.
The rules already work for youBesluit orka · KSA

Two mechanics that trap players elsewhere are banned here: any bonus tied to losses (cashback), and urgency framing like countdown timers. Under-24s may not be bonus-targeted at all — hence "alleen voor 24+".

A ticking clock is a red flag, not a deal.
Worked example · what clearing a €100 bonus costs on this game Illustration · 30× wagering
Turnover required €100 bonus × 30 €3,000
Expected cost at 96.21% studio default · 3.79% edge €113.70
Expected cost at 94.25% the build verified in NL · 5.75% edge €172.50
Difference the build makes same bonus, same terms €58.80
Read the bottom row again. On a €100 bonus at 30× wagering, the payout build moves the expected cost of clearing it by roughly €59 — over half the bonus. That is why which build you are served matters more than which bonus you take. The 30× here is a worked illustration — swap in the real multiplier and it holds.

Initial Book of Dead review for the Dutch market published

  • Took the release date (14 January 2016), the mechanics and the paytable from Play'n GO's own game page and in-game help file, and triangulated the RTP ladder across six spec sources.
  • Verified the Dutch configuration twice: TOTO publishes 94.25%, marked as changed on 31 July 2024, and a paytable check at ComeOn (licence 2165) found the same. Availability confirmed by Play'n GO's own Dutch launch announcement.
  • Corrected three widely circulated errors. There is no Scarab symbol — the four premiums are Rich Wilde, Osiris, Horus and Anubis. Five Rich Wildes on a line pay 500×, not 5,000× (the in-game table counts coins per line). And the two "max win" figures are different units: 5,000× is a multiplier, the round cap is cash.
  • Set out the Dutch rule layer — no statutory minimum RTP, the October 2024 deposit limits, Cruks — and separated it from three claims repeated in error: the credit-card ban (British), a 21+ age (dropped June 2026) and 24 as a playing age.

Version v1.0, published 20 Jul 2026. Licences are checked on the Kansspelwijzer and legal points against the regulator's own guidance. Corrections: [email protected].

Read this table by its third column, not its second. All six hold a Dutch licence, so what they disclose separates them: only TOTO states the rate on the page and ComeOn's came from the in-game paytable, while the rest publish nothing — unmeasurable from outside rather than worse. The Per €100 column is theoretical cost, not a bonus with wagering. Payments are near-identical: iDEAL is the deposit rail everywhere but is deposit-only, with withdrawals to your verified counter-account. Footnotes are in the compliance box below.

My bonus terms say max €2 per spin. Someone told me Dutch law caps every spin at €1 anyway — is that right?

That is a German rule. There is no statutory per-spin cap in the Netherlands — the Dutch rules control deposits, not stake size. So the €2 in your terms binds you: breaching it can void a bonus balance even when the software allows the bet, as a published arbitration case over a four-figure balance showed.

Before you play — the three things that actually affect you
  • Book of Dead is available at KSA-licensed casinos and you must be 18 or over. Verify any site on the Kansspelwijzer at kansspelautoriteit.nl — search by company, brand, website or app. If it is not listed, it holds no Dutch licence 1.
  • The payout build is the operator's choice, not the game's — and Dutch law sets no minimum and no duty to publish it. Both lobbies we could verify run 94.25% against the studio's 96.21% default, which is roughly €5.75 versus €3.79 per €100 staked. Open the game's info screen and read the rate before you deposit 2.
  • Set your deposit limit before you play — new accounts start at €350 a month, or €150 under 24. Self-exclude nationwide through Cruks with your DigiD at cruksregister.nl, or talk to someone free and anonymously on 0800 24 000 22 (Open over Gokken).

1. 18+ · T&Cs apply. Licences matched on the Kansspelwijzer, verified 2 August 2026. 2. Payout builds verified the same day: TOTO publishes 94.25% (marked changed 31 July 2024); ComeOn's came from the in-game paytable; BetMGM.nl, Kansino and Unibet.nl publish no rate, and "not published" means exactly that. Jack's "96%" is marketing prose, not a stated configuration. Builds can change at any time, and a full advertising and bonus ban proposed in June 2026 is a draft, not law. Always read the operator's own terms — they, not this page, are the contract.

A Book of Dead session under Kansspelautoriteit rules

Real-money Book of Dead in the Netherlands happens only at operators licensed by the Kansspelautoriteit under the KOA framework — and the licence changes the session around the slot more than the slot itself. KSA-licensed sites run mandatory deposit-limit checks, every login is preceded by a Cruks check against the national self-exclusion register, and the return served here is the 94.25% build rather than the 96.21% studio default. That is exactly why the info-screen check this page keeps recommending is the first thing to do after login.

Bonus expectations deserve the same sobriety, because Dutch rules cut most of the usual promotion economy away: no bonus may be offered to anyone under 24, loss-linked offers such as cashback are prohibited, and gambling advertising is heavily restricted in general. On a high-volatility slot with a 5,000× ceiling and one expanding symbol deciding the free spins, that is no loss at all — the number that governs your session is the served RTP, not a promotion. Check the served figure first; decide the stake second.

And if the chase stops being fun, the exit is close and Dutch: Loket Kansspel gives advice on 0800-2400022, and a Cruks registration closes every licensed lobby at once.

Responsible gambling

Play within your limits

Online slots are built to lose more than they pay over time. On the studio's default build that is a 3.79% house edge; on the build verified at Dutch lobbies, 5.75%. Keep it entertainment, never a way to recover losses.

Warning signs to stop: chasing losses, betting more than you can afford, borrowing, hiding play, gambling to escape stress. If any sound familiar, set a limit, take a break, or register with Cruks below.

NetherlandsKSA licensed

Must be 18+. Online casinos need a Koa licence from the Kansspelautoriteit. Since October 2024 new players start on a monthly deposit limit of at most €350€150 under 24 — and raising it needs a personal contact moment, not a checkbox.

CruksNationwide block

One registration, every licensed operator. Sign up with DigiD and every licensed operator — online and land-based — must turn you away before each session.

The minimum is six months, with an eight-day cooling-off before an early exit takes effect. Your BSN is matched as a double-encrypted code and destroyed afterwards.

12 Frequently asked questions

Everything Dutch players ask about Book of Dead

Every question below came from Google's People Also Ask on Netherlands-locale searches, captured 2 August 2026 — in the wording players actually search.

01

Wat is Book of Dead slot?

A 2016 Play'n GO Egyptian slot — Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead, released 14 January 2016 — that defined the "Book of" sub-genre. Next step: try the demo above.

02

Hoe werkt Book of Dead?

Symbols pay left-to-right along 1–10 lines. The Book is both wild and scatter — 3/4/5 pay 2×/20×/200× and award 10 free spins, during which one drawn symbol fills its reel, no wagering attached. Next step: see the paytable.

03

Wat is het RTP van Book of Dead slot?

It depends where you play. 96.21% is Play'n GO's default, but both Dutch lobbies we verified (TOTO and ComeOn) run 94.25% — roughly €5.75 instead of €3.79 per €100. Next step: read it in the info screen.

04

Is Book of Dead een gokkast met hoge volatiliteit?

Yes — rated high. Nearly all the win potential is in the free spins, so the base game stays quiet; players commonly report 200+ spins without a meaningful win. Next step: read the bankroll walkthrough.

05

Heeft Book of Dead een functie met gratis spins?

Yes — three or more Books award 10 free spins, with no wagering (they are the game's own spins), and one drawn symbol expanding to fill its reel. A full screen of Rich Wilde returns 5,000×, a Ten 100×; there is no bonus-buy. Next step: see the expanding-symbol table.

06

Is Book of Dead een goede gokkast?

As a high-variance classic, yes — we score it 8.8/10, though players are more split (5.9/10 across 28 reviews). If you want frequent small wins, look elsewhere. Next step: check the verdict against your play style.

07

Wat is een goede RTP?

The share a game returns over millions of spins — a 96% game costs about €4 per €100 long-term. The normal band is 94–97%, so 96.21% is good and 94.25% acceptable. Next step: see the per-€100 costs above.

08

Welke online casino's zijn goedgekeurd in Nederland?

Only casinos with a Koa licence from the Kansspelautoriteit — Book of Dead is live across ten or more, including TOTO, ComeOn, BetMGM.nl, Kansino, Jack's and Unibet.nl. Next step: confirm any operator in the Kansspelwijzer.

09

What's the maximum win in the Book of Dead?

5,000× your total stake, when Rich Wilde fills the screen. Note five on one line pay 500×, not 5,000× (the in-game table counts coins per line), and "max win" covers two limits — a multiplier and a cash cap. Next step: see the paytable.
