Book of Dead slot review — Spain runs four RTP builds, not one

Play'n GO's Egyptian classic has been live since January 2016 and still sets the template every "Book" clone is measured against. The number every other review quotes — 96.21% — is real, but it is only one of five builds the studio licenses. In DGOJ-licensed lobbies we found four running side by side, from 96.21% down to 91.25% — and Spanish law gives you a way to see which one you are on.

TL;DR

Book of Dead in 30 seconds

24 min read ~6,000 words 9.0/10
  • Best for: patient, high-variance players chasing the 5,000× max win through the expanding-symbol free spins.
  • Strong points: one expanding symbol fills a whole reel · 10 retriggerable free spins with no wagering · a clean 5×3, 10-line layout that still reads on a phone · ten DGOJ-licensed lobbies checked for the build they publish.
  • Watch out — the Spain-specific one: the build you get is set by the lobby, not by the game. We found 96.21%, 94.36%, 94.25% and 91.25% running at the same time; several operators publish nothing at all. On €100 staked that spread is €3.79 versus €8.75 in theoretical cost.
  • Verdict: still the benchmark Book slot in 2026 — and in Spain where you play it changes what it costs you. Play the demo, then use the payout figures every licensed operator has to publish before you pick a lobby.

Pros

  • Spanish licensees must publish the build and six months of real payouts
  • Expanding special symbol fills a reel and pays as a scatter
  • 10 free spins, no wagering, retriggerable
  • Stocked by ten DGOJ-licensed lobbies, in euros
  • Full feature parity on mobile

Cons

  • High variance, with long dry spells
  • Half the .es lobbies we checked publish no build at all — and the spread across those that do is 4.96 points
  • No bonus-buy — the feature only arrives on 3+ scatters
  • A 2016 presentation — not cutting-edge

How Book of Dead actually plays

Six tabs: the feature, pacing, a bankroll walkthrough, mobile.

Free spins · expanding symbol · retrigger

The expanding symbol is where the 5,000× cap lives

Land 3+ Book scatters for 10 free spins (no wagering) and one symbol, drawn before the round and fixed throughout, expands to fill its reel. A gamble round follows any win: colour doubles, suit quadruples, five times maximum.

Rhythm · dead spins · the wait

A base game that waits

The base game is deliberately low-event while you hunt three Books.

The original vs its siblings

The original

Book of Dead perfected the expanding-symbol mechanic in 2016. The closest comparison is Play'n GO's own Legacy of Dead.

Computed bankroll walkthrough

What happens to €100 at €0.20 spins

On the 96.21% build, the theoretical cost is €3.79 per €100; on the 91.25% build it is €8.75.

Cross-device experience

A lightweight 2016 build that runs anywhere

Predating the heavy-animation era, the 5×3 grid runs smoothly in portrait, with autoplay and quick-spin both a tap away.

Art direction · animation · audio

Tomb art and an escalating feature cue

Clean 2016 Egyptian art and a low-key soundtrack lifting into a choral cue when the 10 free spins land — the game's own spins, so no wagering attaches.

08 Symbols & paytable

Every symbol and payout — and the 5,000× route

A classic line-pay slot: 3+ matching symbols from the leftmost reel along one of the 10 paylines. Below: the paytable, the dual-role Book, and the route to 5,000×.

Where the 5,000× comes from

Every figure above is a multiple of your total stake. Watch the unit trap: the in-game paytable counts in coins per line, so the "5,000" beside Rich Wilde there is 500× total stake at ten lines.

Five Rich Wildes on a line returns 500×; ten lines filled is 5,000× — exactly where Play'n GO caps a round. Draw a Ten and the same screen returns 100×: fifty-fold, on identical reel luck.

09 Spanish rules in play

On a Spanish licence, six months of real payout data is yours

A Spanish licence goes further than the single theoretical figure most reviews stop at.

Six months of real payout data, by lawOrden HAP/1370/2014 art. 8.1.2.e)

The operator must give you, in Spanish, the expected return calculated over one year and the real percentage of prize return over amounts staked, game by game, for each of the six preceding months. Jackpot wins sit outside that percentage.

Codere's Jan–Jun 2026 filing runs 86,74% to 104,13% — actual monthly returns, never the theoretical RTP.
A time and spend ceiling, set before you startOrden HAP/1370/2014 art. 14.1 RD 176/2023 art. 13.3–13.5

The game asks for a time and spend ceiling before the first spin. Those fields cannot be pre-filled, cannot carry over from last time, and cannot be changed once you are playing.

Reach either one and the session closes itself.
A reality check every 15 minutesOrden HAP/1370/2014 art. 8.2 & 14.3

Elapsed time and amount spent, on an interval you choose, with a floor of 15 minutes. Open a new session within 60 minutes of the last and a notice has to appear before the reels do.

Net weekly losses of 600 € across three straight weeks — 200 € if you are 25 or under — is the point where the operator is legally required to check in with you.
600 € a day, per operatorRD 1614/2011 art. 36 + Anexo II RD 520/2026

Every licensee caps deposits at 600 € a day, 1.500 € a week, 3.000 € a month. Lowering one is immediate; raising it takes a DGOJ safer-gambling test, a clean three months behind you, three days to apply, then holds for another three.

Upcoming, not current: from 25 March 2027 RD 520/2026 adds 700 € a day 1.750 € a week 3.300 € per four weeks, counted across every operator at once.
No demo play before you have an accountLicensed .es operators Paf ES, verbatim

A licensee may offer play money only to registered account holders, and the demo must mirror the real game's payout rate. Paf ES puts it plainly: «Ningún juego de la web está disponible en modo Demo debido a la legislación vigente».

The demo above is the provider build, outside that rule.
No «casi acertaste», and a dropped spin still paysRD 176/2023 art. 17.2 art. 13.3

Near-miss messaging is banned outright: «Queda prohibido que los resultados… vengan acompañados de mensajes del tipo ‘Casi acertaste’, ‘Estuviste cerca’, o similar».

Lose the connection mid-spin and the round completes on its own.

Two things people believe about Spanish rules that are not true. There is no statutory minimum RTP in Spain — a full keyword scan of Orden HAP/1370/2014 returns no floor. And the welcome-bonus “30-day rule” was annulled: the Supreme Court struck down the restrictions on new-customer promotions in April 2024, and a re-ban is tabled but not law. The 30-day rule that survives, art. 13.7, is a different one — no personalised promotions for 30 days after your deposit limits go up.

09 Game-tuned bonuses

The bonus rule that can't touch your RTP

Spanish law is specific on the point that matters here: a bonus or loyalty promotion may not alter a game's RTP (RD 958/2020 art. 13.6.a). And the picture most Spanish pages still get wrong: the restrictions on new-customer promotions were annulled by the Tribunal Supremo in April 2024, so welcome bonuses are legal again. A re-ban is proposed, not law.

One Spanish-language "forum thread" on this subject is manufactured, and the pattern is easy to read: eleven members sharing one join date, one post count and one city, duplicate member IDs, auto-generated avatars, and affiliate links all on a single campaign token. Initial publication — Claire Wilson, Slots & Games Reviewer

Initial Book of Dead review for the Spanish market published

  • Took the release date (14 January 2016) and the free-spins mechanics from Play'n GO's own game page.
  • Documented the full ladder (96.21% / 94.25% / 91.25% / 87.25% / 84.18%) and which builds are live in Spain: 96.21%, 94.36%, 94.25% and 91.25%.
  • Checked ten operators for the build they publish and mapped the Spanish rules that change how the game plays — the six-month payout disclosure under Orden HAP/1370/2014, the pre-session time and loss ceilings, the 600 €/1.500 €/3.000 € deposit caps and the cross-operator limit arriving in March 2027.
  • Swept Spanish player platforms and found no genuine Spanish-language discussion of this slot — so we published that finding, and the English-language forum record behind the RTP-build issue, instead of a composite score.
  • Corrected two widely repeated errors: the third RTP rung is 91.25%, not 92.07%, and there is no separate higher game-round cap — per spin and per round are both 5,000×.

Version v1.0, published 20 Jul 2026. Licences are checked against the DGOJ operator register and legal points against the BOE text itself. Corrections: [email protected].

Book of Dead vs. its duplicates

Six Egyptian "Book" slots share the mechanic. The four Play'n GO titles ship the same five-rung RTP ladder — so "which is better" is partly a question of which build your .es lobby runs.

What actually changes. All six run in DGOJ-licensed .es lobbies. Start from the Book of Dead game page.

That silence is not evidence of a worse build; it is just silence — and none of it is machine-verifiable from outside Spain (PlatinCasino.es returns a Cloudflare 403, Codere's PDF host an Akamai block). Your next step: under Orden HAP/1370/2014 art. 8.1.2.e) the operator must hand you, on request, the expected annual return and the real payout percentage for each of the last six months. Ask for it.

Which RTP version am I playing, and does it really matter for a casual player?

CW
Claire Wilson 16 Jul 2026 Editor

More than almost anywhere. The builds live in Spanish lobbies run from 96.21% down to 91.25% — roughly €3.79 versus €8.75 per €100. The lobby must show its rate and six months of real payouts (Orden HAP/1370/2014 art. 8.1.2.e).

My bonus terms say max €2 per spin. Is there a Spanish law that caps the stake as well?

CW
Claire Wilson 08 Jul 2026 Editor

No — Spain sets no statutory stake cap on an online slot; the minimum and maximum per spin come from the operator's own game rules (Orden HAP/1370/2014 art. 12.1). So your €2 is a contract term at that operator, not law — and breaching it can still void a bonus balance even when the software lets the bet through. Check the figure on the game's info sheet before you raise your stake.

Before you play — the three things that actually affect you
  • Book of Dead is available at DGOJ-licensed casinos and you must be 18 or over. A licensee has to run on a .es domain (Ley 13/2011 art. 10.4.d), so verify any site by its domain — not its brand — on the DGOJ Buscador de operadores.
  • The RTP build is the operator's choice, not the game's. Four different builds run in .es lobbies at once — 96.21%, 94.36%, 94.25% and 91.25% — and several operators publish nothing. Orden HAP/1370/2014 art. 8.1.2.e) obliges the operator to show the rate and six months of real payouts, so you can read it before depositing 1.
  • Self-exclude nationwide through RGIAJ, the Registro General de Interdicciones de Acceso al Juego, which blocks every online offer in Spain — or talk to someone free and confidentially on the FEJAR helpline, 900 200 225, with self-tests and counselling at jugarbien.es, the DGOJ's own player portal.

1. Licences and published builds were verified on 2 August 2026 against the DGOJ operator register. Where a cell reads "not published", that is what we found — we have not filled a gap with a plausible number. In-lobby RTP cannot be machine-verified from outside Spain: PlatinCasino.es returns a Cloudflare block and Codere's disclosure host an Akamai one, so where a build is not printed on the game page we report the absence rather than guess. Always read the operator's own terms: they, not this page, are the contract.

Responsible gambling

Play within your limits

Online slots keep a mathematical margin over time. On the best Spanish build that margin is a 3.79% house edge — about 3,79 € per 100 € staked; on a weaker 91,25% build it is 8,75%, near 8,75 € per 100 €. Spain gives you the tools to keep this entertainment; the ones below take a minute.

If play stops feeling like a game: chasing losses, staking more than you planned, playing to escape stress. Any of these is a cue to set a deposit limit, take a break, or register with RGIAJ — each one is a step below.

SpainDGOJ licensed

Must be 18+. Online slots are licensed by the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) as Máquinas de azar. Under Ley 13/2011 art. 10.4.d–e a licensee has to run on a .es domain and redirect Spanish traffic to it — so the .es address is the licence signal.

RGIAJNational block

One registration, every licensed offer in Spain. The Registro General de Interdicciones de Acceso al Juego is the national self-exclusion list; registering blocks every online gambling offer in the country. Sign up three ways: a paper form at a public register, post office or police station online at the DGOJ sede electrónica the Android app DNIe autoprohibidos.

This is autoprohibición — national and indefinite, cancellable only after six months (RD 176/2023 art. 3.b). Its sibling, autoexclusión, is the operator-level, temporary block set with a single casino (art. 3.c).

Free helpFEJAR confidential

900 200 225 — the FEJAR helpline, free to call. FEJAR is on the Registro Nacional de Asociaciones (nº F-1349) and funded by the Ministerio de Sanidad. Not every operator lists it, so keep the number to hand.

For self-tests, counselling and the full network of local services, jugarbien.es is the DGOJ's own player portal, open at any hour.

Gambling is for entertainment, not income. FEJAR and jugarbien.es are free and confidential — if this is on your mind, for you or someone close to you, a first call is an easy step today.

12 Frequently asked questions

Everything Spanish players ask about Book of Dead

Every question below came from Google's People Also Ask on Spanish-locale searches, captured 2 August 2026 — not invented, not padded. Questions render in English; the Spanish search term stays where it is the entity.

01

How do you play Book of Dead?

Five reels, three rows, ten paylines paying left to right. The Book is the only special symbol: it substitutes as a wild and pays anywhere as a scatter — 3, 4 or 5 Books return 2×, 20× or 200× your total bet.

The top prize is 5,000× your total stake — the ceiling per game round.

02

Is Book of Dead a high-volatility slot (tragamonedas de alta volatilidad)?

Yes. Play'n GO rates its volatility 7 out of 10 — high. In practice: long dry stretches, with most of the value in the free-spins round.

03

Does Book of Dead have a free-spins feature?

Yes. Three or more Books award 10 free spins with no wagering — they are the game's own spins, not a casino bonus. Before the round begins, one ordinary symbol is drawn at random and becomes the expanding symbol for all ten spins. Retriggers are unlimited.

There is no buy feature in any market, Spain included.

04

Who made the Book of Dead slot?

Play'n GO, released as Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead on 14 January 2016. It is often mis-filed under Pragmatic Play — that is John Hunter and the Book of Tut.

05

Is Book of Dead a good slot?

As a high-variance classic, yes — clean, readable and mechanically sound; we score it 9.0/10.

06

Which Book slot has the highest RTP?

Book of 99 by Relax Gaming, published at 99%. Book of Dead's own default build is 96.21%.

07

How do you check a slot's RTP in a Spanish casino?

Two routes, both on the operator. The game's own info sheet inside the lobby states the payout rate of the build you are about to play. And Orden HAP/1370/2014 art. 8.1.2.e) obliges a licensed operator to publish, per game, the real percentage of prizes paid against amounts staked for each of the six preceding months.

08

How do you play for real money in Spain?

Play only at a DGOJ-licensed operator on a .es domain. You can confirm any name on the DGOJ Buscador de operadores at ordenacionjuego.es.

You must be 18 or over and pass identity verification before you can deposit or withdraw.
